I built a new computer, wife gets the old one (an upgrade for her too).

The old one was dual boot, Win98 and XP, XP is default, worked fine for many
months. All I had to do to set it up for her was to copy the data from the
hard drive in her ancient HP, put it on a drive in her son to be new one,
install a few programs that she needed, make some shortcuts, etc. Should be
easy and was.

Then XP through a hizzy fit. Among other things, the computer would not
boot into Win98. Selecting same from the boot menu resulted in the timer
count down stopping but nothing more; pressing <Enter> to actually *start
booting* to Win98 only re-displayed the boot menu again. The boot.ini is
fine, checked it. So are the two necessary NTxxx files on C:

Numerous other things such as XP wiping out changes made since last boot -
things like shortcuts made, folders made, etc. - on the next boot made me
feel it was FUBARed so I did a repair install of XP. Bad move, now XP won't
boot either....XP starts then just reboots...an endless circle. Other boot
options such as safe, last known..., etc do the same thing.

So I have two questions:

1. Any idea how to get the machine bootable again?

2. Any idea why I couldn't boot into Win98 from the boot menu before XP
got totally messed up.

If worse comes to worst I can pull the drive, copy off the stuff on my new
computer, reformat, install OSs, copy back and do evertything all over
again. I'd rather not, hope you folks have some thoughts.
