Steve

I currently like to use Windows now and then as a brake
from my usual NIX. However one reason that puts me off
from moving to windows as a more permenant workstation is
because every version seems to be a remake of the old
thing, just with some new "enahancments". I feel that
with the resources Microsoft have they should have a
totaly new operating system under way and quit re-making
the same thing over and over. I know its not an easy task
however for example, Apple was able to pull this off and
ever since, there number of users has significantly
increased and that was with not even 10% of the resources
that Microsoft Have. With a fresh new start I feel that
they could make greate improvements on windows. With so
many pogrammers and so many resouces I dont understand
how Microsoft hasn't hit us with something completely
new.

One could say the same thing about *nix. built on UNIX.
Windows 9x/ME was built on top of DOS. This changed with
NT. Windows NT/2000/XP is kind of the "fresh start" Now
with Apple only having a small section of the market they
can feel free to re-invent themsevles. If you look though
this newsgroup you can see all the people still having
problem with older hardware and software moving from 9x to
an NT envirnment. If Microsoft "start's fresh" that means
ALL or mostly all new software must be re-compiled to work
with the new design. moving the 97% of the market to that
will take ALOT of time.

Not to mention a lot of money. I still shudder when I think about when I
finally had to move from CP/M to DOS and either run through a questionable
emulator or replace all of my software.
