The Folder is Full

When adding a Field (I currently use about 50 additional fields) to the top
row in a Contacts view, Outlook comes up with the following error message
(but no clue as to what to do): 'Outlook cannot display this view. The
folder is full'. Please could you let me know what I have done and what I
can do about this error report.

Many thanks

it could mean you have too many fields in the view... too many contacts (it
starts at 16,000 and goes up, depending on the version) ... the deleted item
folder needs emptied... your temp folders in windows are full.

Diane,

Many thanks for your comments. I have 15304 contacts in my Contacts folder.
Does this mean that I have to move some of them to another location and if
so, will the Fields come across into Field Chooser so that I can apply
filters (ie if field = Yes etc).

Can I set a filter to search two separate contact folders without using
Exchange Server (ie everything is one my computer).

Many thanks for your help

James

Are you using a new Ol2003 pst or an old pst, created in an really old
version of outlook that did not support large tables?

If large table support is enabled, you can have in the neighborhood of
65,000 items. If you use OL2003's Unicode pst, you can have virtually
unlimited items.

Right click on the top level of the pst and choose properties, then
advanced - a check box for large table support should be present if you are
using an old pst that was never upgraded to large tables. Unless you plan to
use the pst with old versions of outlook, I would create a new pst and move
everything over - note that moving views is a PITA though.

BTW - yes, one option is move some to another folder. But you can't really
filter two folders at once with or without Exchange. You can use advanced
find or apply the filter/view to both folders, but you can't view both at
once.

Checking for large table support may fix the problem for you, so two folders
won't be necessary.

Diane,

I have tried the following options:

1. Moved 12,000 contacts into a new Contact folder within Personal
Folders - same error occurred.
2. Created a new folder using the Data File Management option and moved
12,000 contacts into a new folder - same error occurred.
3. Reduced the number of contacts, by deleting entries, from nearly 16,000
down to 2950 same error occurred.

When I create and add another Field to the current set up the entries
disappear and the following error appears: 'Unable to display information.
There is either a problem connecting to the server or an error has occurred.
Try starting Microsoft Office Outlook again'.

In desperation.

Diane,

Tried this and the option is not available. I can confirm that I am using
the format: Personal Folders File (97-2002) with Compressible Encryption.

Diane,

I have moved the bulk of the contacts to a new folder (using DFM) where the
Field options seem to work. The original Contacts folds still fails so I'm
going to set up a new file and import the old contacts into this new area to
see if this will rid me of the error.

(Keeping the dialogue going in case it's useful for anybody else).

Diane,

I think that I have cracked the problem. I have approached the error as a
faulty contacts folder. By building two new ones, copying the contents of
the original to each one, deleting the contacts that I don't need the fields
are (so far) back and working.

Many thanks for your help.
