Thanks for any advice you can provide.
I read recently on Yahoos news that Microsoft had freebie
security enhancements available through it's site. I
logged in and clicked sufficient options to have
Microsoft tell mee that there were fixes available for my
home XP system. I initiated the downloads and the whole
process chugged for about an hour... I have a 128k cable
connection...my question: given that the fix, download
and install took so long, how can I be sure that I got
them all? Supplemental question would be: is the
Microsoft system that recognized my XP system from my
login clever enough to know which updates I already have
installed?
Cheers,
David.

Assuming you mean you went to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com then what
actually happens is that windows update tells your computer "I got 'this,
this, this, and some of that' on the menu today" and your computer knows
itself what it needs off that 'menu', and the list you get shown to pick
from is what your computer reckons it needs out of what is available.

Just try and get into the habit of visiting Windows Update, or better still
turn on automatic updating, and you can always be fairly confident you are
up to date.
