Windows98 support dries up within a week and if you need to reinstall
your os you won't be able to use Windows Update to get all the fixes.
I've got several win98 boxes that I need to image the harddrive. XXCOPY
is no good to me - I need something with a gui. Any recommendations?

I never used Win98 so I'm not sure how many hotfixes are involved. I found
this page on the Microsoft Website
http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp . It seems to
have a large list of critical and recommended updates that can be downloaded
to a computer. Not sure if you would have to install each one individually
or if you can make a "slipstream disk" using your Windows 98 CD.

Is that correct? I was under the impression that there would be *no*
*more* updates/fixes made available for W98, but that those that are
currently available would remain so. BICBW...

I would think that whatever is there online will remain there in the
future too. Would be odd for MS to just remove everything so nobody
could reformat and update ever again.

Well colour me misinformed, but I'd like to image the boxes just in
case.

It's not a bad idea to image now. MS will (probably) make updates to
the OS available indefinitely, as they still do with Win95, but it may
be harder to find the right Win98 drivers for your hardware. I don't
know how long MS will still offer them through WU.

I'm afraid I don't have a freeware GUI imaging suggestion. Sorry.

Dear POKO,

I am sorry that I can't recommend any program to You though You might have a
look at one of the Linux live CD's like Knoppix, perhaps there is something
on it You might be able to use for Your purpose (don't be alarmed by the
fact that it is Linux; it boots KDE automatically and within a couple of
minutes You'll have found out that it works exactly the same as
windows)(probably making many Linux fans angry with this ;-) ; what I mean
is that You'll know how everything works very fast, it is very easy).

Also You could check out http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ to see whether there
is a usefull utility for You in the list on that page.

The main reason that I post this message is because I hope to be of at least
a little bit of service to You by ginging You the next - IMHO very usefull -

Good luck!

Yours sincerely,

Hello POKO,

Ive used the unofficial patch set from

http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

and it has been fine; although saying it's been good for me is no guarantee
of satisfaction for everybody, before all useneet flames me.

You could try it on one, or ignore it, or download the lot from microsoft
and burn to a CD (I've done that as well),; there seems no point in
d/ling something that doesnt' change if you clean reinstall as often as I
do. I find it's like a spring clean, and quite painless..... with
practice ;-)

From a source (er country) you "trust"

http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/content/view/1369/51/

Existing support documents and content, however, will continue to be
available through the Microsoft Support Product Solution Center Web
site . The solution Web site will continue to host previous How-to,
Troubleshooting, and Configuration content for anyone who may need
self-service.

When I last reinstalled W98SE, I ran for 3 months with NO patches and had
no problems. Of course, I don't use IE, OE, Word, Excel, etc. That
computer is dead, now running W2K, but I will later run W98SE again and
will not load most of those "critical" patches. YMMV

Quite so. I ran Win98se four years without ever adding a patch and
never had a problem. Like you I don't use IE or OE, but do use MS
Office.

I don't know about a gui HD imager but you can still download the WIN98
update files. This site will give you instructions on how to get the
update files ALL IN ONE SHOT:

http://bhandler.spaces.msn.com/Blog/cns!70F64BC910C9F7F3!1165.entry

While your at it, you can download IE6 SP1 (full setup):

http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html

Both sites will link you DIRECTLY to Microsoft. The link
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp) will
require you to save each update individually and is a b*tch to install
(personal experience).

And FYI, the size of the WIN98 update is approximately 170MByte. 8~0

I hope this will help some.

which is about the size of the original 98se! Does it run half the
speed after all that patching? Its about what I'd expect ms to do.

Same here. Still running SE since June '03 with nary a patch. You don't
need no stinkin' patches if you don't run no stinkin' MS programs. :-)

Of course, Safehex practices are a must!

What makes you think it would run that fast after all those updates?
