I sleceted some cells and did some text to column conversion with a
comma as teh delimiter. After doing this I had some data from another
source that I pasted into another cell on this spreadsheet and the
text to column function was invoked on this data. was there something
I had to do to terminate the earlier text to column operation?

Start the "Data/ Text to columns" dialogue again. Deselect the comma
delimiter. At this stage you can cancel, and hopefully the paste will then
be OK.

That sounded like a plausible solution, however my testing tonight did
not support this suggestion.

But thank you for looking.

Try it again.

Put some test data into an empty cell
Select that cell
data|text to columns|delimited, but uncheck all the options
and finish up.

Clear that cell

Then try pasting your data.

Dave,

Your reply seems to confirm the suggestion from the first responent.
After spending some more time with the sptreadsheet I can't even
reproduce the original problem now.

I'll tuck this info away for a future day if I see the issue again.

Thanks for replying.

As soon as you close excel and reopen, excel's options for data|text to columns
are changed back to the defaults.

So your testing will have to start with a Data|Text to columns--to change the
options away from the defaults.
