is it possible to keep data in a text file and use vb to only import the
data from a tet file that meets a certain range of criterias. this would
be very helpful where there are more then 64,000 entries

That is possible but from your description you might be better off with a
database. That being said here is a link to a site which might help. You need
to create an ADO recordset...
