text files and abbreviations

As a transcriptionist, I have to save each file that I type in Word 2003
first as a .txt file, then as a .doc file. However, with word 2003,
apostrophes and a couple of other abbreviations show up in the text file as
little blocks in place of the apostrophe. Why does this happen? It does not
happen with the previous version of word.

Try changing your font. Some font's cannot read apostrophe's and other
special characters. Arial Unicode MS can usually read everything.

There is no choice of fonts (and certainly not Arial Unicode MS) in a .txt
file.
