test period

Have NT4 Domain. Will move to Win2000 Domain within a couple of
months. But for now, for testing purposes, I want to install a win2000
member server running Terminal Services in application mode. I will
not be installing Licensing part yet because I understand there is a
90-day period before that is required.

I'm thinking that I can test that way, because only the Licensing
Server has to be installed on a Domain Server, so therefore until the
90 days are up I'm okay without a win2k Domain Server (AD).

some quick questions:

1.Are the above statements true, so I can indeed test that way.
2.Can I indeed test for 90 days without installing a Licensing Server.
3.Now, for the most important question, will testing this cause any
problems along the line of other posts I see, reference "I used 10
sessions while testing, now that I'm implementing, I have 10 licenses
less than I should have"

Thanks, Josh

As long as you don't install any licenses on your Terminal Services Licsense Server or you don't install a Terminal Services License Server your test machines will not consume any licenses

I'm wondering why you're planning in the future to deploy a 4 year old OS? Terminal Services in 2003 is superior so many ways, but mostly that the end-user experience is much, much better

I put this page together today that is a compilation of every how-to article I had or could find. You should find quite a few things there to help you in your testing process

Thanks for the reply. Considering deploying win2000 instead of
win2003 for one reason: Because TSCALs are not required when running
Win2000 Terminal services, whereas they are required when running
Win2003 Terminal services (for win2000/XP Pro clients). Have to cut
costs where ever possible. We're approx 50-75 users total, but not yet
determined how many of those will be using Terminal Services. (will
never be more than 100 users, and not all of them will require TS).

We actually do have ONE win2003 Server license/CD, in addition to
several Win2000 Servers.. If the benefits of running TS 2003 outweigh
the cost of the TSCALs, I'll certainly pass that on to the
powers-that-be.

I'm going to your web page to learn more as soon as I post this.

Thanks

I've one addition to Patricks answer:
If you find yourself in the situation that the 90 day grace period
is over, but you are not ready yet to move to W2K completely, you
can in fact install a W2K Licensing Server on the same server as
the TS. The only exception to the rule that a W2K LS must run on a
DC is when the W2K TS is a member of an NT 4.0 domain or
workgroup.
