Temporary log off

I tried to log off my computer while there are programs running. when I came
back and log on to computer again. All running program are automatically
closed. Can I keep all programs running the same if I temporary log off and
log on again?

You could activate a password-protected screen saver
or you could switch users.
 
You want to lock, not log off.
