Is it alright to delete everything (about 1g) from my temporary
internet folder found under doc and setting/name/local
settings/temprary internet folder?
If I do delete everything will I lose all my cookies and then have to
start over with signing in to some of my favorites etc.
thanks

Take a look at the Disk Cleanup Utility:
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup

It has the ability to remove all those files. Also you may
want to reduce the amount of files cached for Internet
browsing by selection Tools>Options in Internet Explorer.

These files are only files cached from web pages you've
been to on the Internet. They can be removed with no
issues. Cookies will not be touched unless you say to
remove the Cookies.

Hope this helps!

Perfectly alright, in fact recommended. When I do it, I always get a dialog
box asking me, "Cookiename is a cookie. Are you sure you want to delete it
?" Selecting "No" should save them.

With regard to cookies, I recommend downloading Empty Temp Folders
(freeware). It allows you to save the cookies you want to a separate
list, same for your history. I have it set to flush my temporary
internet files whenever Windows is loaded.

Much safer to delete them using IE itself - tools, internet options,
general, hit the 'delete files' button. Delete cookies is a separate
button (and they are stored in separate folder .. called (wait for it)
'cookies').
