I have a current doucument saved as a template. I would like to write
directly over this document without changing it. For example write such
things as name and date, over lines. How do I do this?

"Document" and "Template" are terms of art in Word. You get a template from
a document by using File > Save As and choosing document template as the
file type. You get a document from a template by using File > New and
choosing the template on which to base your document. I suspect that what
you are desiring is
what Word calls an "online form." Check this in help. For more about online
forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles. You may also want to look at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm.

For more on the different kinds of templates, tabs on the file new dialog,
and locations of templates folders see
http://addbalance.com/usersguide/templates.htm.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your reply! What I need to do however is to use an existing
document as a form. I would litteraly like to be able to type directly over
it for example. Name:____________ > Name: John Smith but with the underline
still present. Is this possible to do? Any help is apreciated.

You have to move it into the background. Right now, what happens when you
try to type on the form?
