I have created a template in WinXP with Word 2k and placed
it in a public folder on our server. When it is opened in
Word 2k on OS Win98se/2k and XP, it opens properly as a
Word Document and you can change "save as" file type.
When the SAME template is opened with Word 97 on Win98se,
it is treated as though you have to save another template
and you can not change it into Document (it’s all greyed
out). Is the problem a setting I have missed in Word 97
or creating it with Word 2k caused it or is it an
operating system (OS) problem? All have service pack 1
installed. What can I do so that Word 97 treats the
template as a Document?

Thanks,,,,,,,Pat

Word 97 and later versions of Word will never treat a template as a document
when it comes time to save it. When a template is "opened" it can never be
saved as a document in any version of Word since Word 97 (and probably
before). The way to use a template is to create a new document based on the
template. That can be saved as a document and will be by default.

You should not be using File => Open with templates unless you are trying to
make changes to the templates.

If your template is in one of your templates folders and you use File => New
you'll be able to easily create a new document based on the template.
