I have one Normal.dot that is available for all my users (read only) so only
1 has to be backed up etc. Each user then has a separate AutoText file (in
startup). Some users would like specific toolbar options available to them.
I do not want to alter the Normal.dot but cannot a solution of where to store
this. I have tried their AutoText file (from startup) but this does not
alter the templates they are opening. Any suggestions gratefully received.

You could create a template based on your normal.dot and save the toolbars in
there, and then place this in the default startup location, or you could save
it somewhere else and go to tools templates and add ins and add that template
if you don't want to save in the default startup folder. Or, if the same
machine is being used by multiple people then youwould need to put the
template for the user toolbars in the word startup folder in the user
profile.

If you want them to be able to customize their personal preferences,
such as toolbars, then they need their own Normal.dot. You could try
to store the customizations in their global template (the AutoText
template in Startup) but as you found some templates will override
these customizations.

Word wasn't designed to share Normal.dot, even if it is read only.
Each user should have a copy of Normal.dot. If they have a folder on
the network then go to Tools/Options/File Locations point the User
Templates to that folder.

However if Word can't find the network for any number of reasons, then
it will create a new Normal.dot on the local drive. When there is more
than one Normal.dot then it can begin to cause additional
problems,errors, etc.

Microsoft does not recommend you share the Normal.dot either.
