template problem

I'm trying to re-format a document by attaching a new template containing the same styles with different definitions and updating the styles. I'm having two problems:
1) The margins are different in the two templates, but when I attach the new template, the margins don't change.

2) I have a horizontal line (a line drawn using the Draw feature). It's black in one template, but blue in the other. This doesn't change when I attach the new template. I've tried (on a whim) attaching a style to the line in both templates. (I'd never heard that you could do this, but it seems to take the style.) Nevertheless, the line doesn't change color.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ellen

Hi Ellen,

Neither of the items you mention are affected by styles, either in a
new document based on a template or in an existing document with a new
template being attached.

Margins are not stored in any style -- they're a property of the
document (or of each section in a multi-section document). Paragraph
indents *are* stored in styles, so you can get the effect you want by
changing the indents.

The style you think you applied to the drawn line was actually applied
to the paragraph containing the line's anchor (the position of the
cursor at the time you created the line). The colors of drawing
objects are not stored in styles, and you'll have to change the line
directly.

To get around both of these problems, instead of attaching your revised
template, create a new blank document based on the template and use Insert |
File to insert the old document. All these issues will be taken care of
automatically.
