Why does Word ask me if I want to "save changes to
template normal.doc" every time I shut it down? Did I
accidently screw up something in it? I always say "no"

You should ask this in a word newsgroup. This one is for XP. Here is a

The file name is normal.DOT not DOC, delete it then open
Word and it will re-create it.

You can set it in the Word menus not to ask you whether you want
to save changes to normal.dot. What is happening is that you are
making minor configuration changes that Word thinks you might like
to have in your working template, normal.dot. If you set it so
that it doesn't ask you, it will save the changes automatically.

Oh, sorry. I didn't even realize at the time it was a
