I am still confused about the new default template location in WORD after 2000

It used to be that you could import a template into the default location that was under Program Files/Office etc, and when somebody wanted to apply that template it was automatically in their selection list when they opted for a New document.

Now, the default location is DocumentsandSettings/Userid/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates

That's fine if you create a new template - it is saved into there by default, and a user creating a New doc will see it in his/her list of templates to apply.

But how do you import a template into there. When you look at your DocumentsandSettings/Userid folder with Explorer, Windows has conveniently hidden Application data.

You can't even open your template in another folder and Save As into the default location for the same reason - you can't see Application Data under your DocumentsandSettings/Userid folder

I don't want my users to have to go to Templates and Add-ins to apply my template. I want it displayed when they request a New document.

Has Windows got too clever for its boots?

I am willing to be humbled for missing the obvious.

You can display the hidden folder through Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder
options.

If you're dealing with users on a network, you can also use the Workgroups
templates location (see Tools > Options > File Locations).

You can open the template and use Save As to save it to the user templates
folder. Then delete the original. The Workgroup Templates folder is a much
better option, though.
