I am trying to add templates to the FILE>>NEW window but I have so confused myself at this point that I am hoping you kind folks will clear this up for me

The templates that show up there now are located in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\103
I tried adding my new ones to this folder but they didn't show up so I did a little "investigating" in the newsgroups and found that I too (like others I came across) have more than one instance of an XLStart folder as follows

1. C:\Program Files\MS Office\Office (this has one folder in it called "personal" and that has one file in it: Module1.bas

2. C:\Documents and Settings\Marcy\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart (this has two files in it: personal.xls and book.xlt

Finally, my default file location (in Options-General) is the same as #2 (above

Can someone make heads or tails of this mess? All I want to do is have my templates show up when I select FILE>NEW
But, if you are so inclined, can you please tell me what impact the default file location has in the grand scheme of things

As always, I am grateful in advance!

All that is necessary to place a template in the <Files> <New> folder,
<General> tab, is to simply save it as an XL template (.xlt).

After you've made the WB, and you go to save it, at the bottom of the SaveAs
window, is the "SaveAsType" box.
Expand this box and click on "Template(*.xlt).

This will make XL automatically go to your systems template folder.
Just click <Save>, and you're done.
Some flavors of XL will necessitate a close and then re-open before the
template will display in the <File> <New> window.

Now, to revise or update this template, you will want to find this template
folder's location.

Go back a step, to the SaveAs window, where you originally clicked on
Templates in the Files of Type window.
At the top of SaveAs window, in the "SaveIn" box, where it displays
"Templates", expand this box, and you'll see a graphic path to your systems
template folder.
Make note of it, and you now know exactly where to go to find and/or update
the original template.

The templates that show up there now are located in:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033

You're welcome.

Something additional.
If you have a large number of templates, you might want to segregate them
into their own separate "Tabs" in the <File> <New> folder, instead of having
them all together under the "General" tab.

If this might be the case, and you would like instructions on how to
accomplish this, post back.

Some added info..........
2. C:\Documents and Settings\Marcy\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLStart (this has two files in it: personal.xls and book.xlt)
Finally, my default file location (in Options-General) is the same as #2 (above)

XLSTART folder is where you would store BOOK.XLT(default new workbook) or
SHEET.XLT(default new worksheet) or Personal.xls and/or any files you want to
open automatically when Excel starts up.

Your default file location in Options>General should NOT be the XLSTART
folder.

Should be a folder that just stores your regular *.xls files for opening and
saving.

I would also recommend you delete any pathname in Options>General "alternate
startt up file location" or in XL 2002 "at startup open files in"
