I've recently updated to Word 2003. My documents are all
based off of a specific template. My templates are
located on a server and the link to that location appears
to be inplace. However, When I open a document for
revision I get a message stating "Could not
open 'XXXXX.dot'. I can click "OK" and the document opens
fine an appears to be appropriately formatted. I'm just
not sure why I get this message, what it really means, and
how can I "fix" it.

I'm not familiar with that specific error message, but it seems to be a similar problem we have encountered with old templates. In our environment they just are opened veeeeery slowly, if all.

So try this:
After you have managed to open your document,
Select Tools -> Templates and add ins
You are given a window with a text "Document template" and a white space below it. If there is any text (but word "Normal") in that space, erase it and then click ok. After this save your template. Next time it should be opened with no pain.
