How do you increase the size of the temporary directory
that a particular installation is trying to extract a
compressed file into? I keep getting a size error.

There is no limit to folder size. Maybe you have quotas set, or the file itself is too big for the file system you are using. Or just not enough free space on your disk.

Have seen this error when there are files and/or folders left in the temp
folder from previous installations. Delete those. Then try running setup
for the new software again.

By default, XP has two default temp locations:
Windows\Temp
Documents and Settings\<user account>\Local Settings\Temp

To see those folders in Windows Explorer, set Folder Options>View to "show
hidden files and folders" and mark the option to show the contents of
system folders. After your new software is installed (and you've restarted
if prompted to do so), change your Folder Options back to whatever you
prefer.
