Taskbar size with Quicklaunch

If I have the Quicklaunch toolbar showing, my Taskbar
doubles in height and the arrow for decreasing its size
is not available. I would like to see the Quicklaunch on
a single row taskbar but cannot get this.

Move the gliders (the vertical bars to surrounding the Quicklaunch icons)
so that fewer items are shown.
The >> at the right of QL can be clicked to reveal hidden icons.

The faint resize handle to the right of QL has probably got dragged over
so far that it has jumped to the lower level. Look for it just under
the right end of the Start button, and drag it right and up to beyond
the QL icons, let go and things will jump back. You can then drag it
left to hide some of those icons - minimum visible is three
