taskbar problems...no icons

I lost my shortcut-icons in the taskbar (where the start
button is located) They just disappeared. I don't know if
I hit a couple of keys and hot-keyed them off the taskbar.
I've tried Toolbars and Quick Launch and get an air box
that says "Cannot Create Toolbar".
I feel that all these shortcut/icons that I have lost are
not deleted but are hidden. I could be wrong.
Also, I created a shortcut on the desktop and tried to
drag it into the taskbar to no avail. It seems like it's
accepting the shortcut but it's not showing up.
The only items that show up in the taskbar are the windows
that I have open.
Can anyone help?
