Hello,

I have windows XP. My taskbar freezes when the computer
comes up. If you place your cursor over the taskbar the
hour glass comes up like it is busy. After awhile it goes
away and I can click on my start button

Help

This is normal *if* you have a lot of things loading up when you boot. For
example, does the area near the clock look like an aisle at Walmart? Do you
have virus software? A firewall? Add-ons, such as desktop managers, programs
that load a part of themselves in order to start up faster? Office (any
version)?

Every one of those items must be loaded into your system before you get
access. Additionally, every one of those things takes up memory. (Check out
http://www.blackviper.com/ for more info.)

Microsoft used to offer a program called BootVis that would let you see what
programs are delaying your boot, however, they stopped offering it. You may
be able to find it on the net somewhere.

I would suggest that you start by finding the programs that start, that you
don't need. An example I have is Mozilla (a web browser). It has an option
to load a part of the program to speed up starting. If I chose that option,
it would extend my boot-up (to load the start-up module into memory.)

Also, check out your Start Up folder. All programs in there will start
everytime you start XP. (Another place would be the system registry, but
mess that up and XP won't start at all.)

Finally, check out Black Viper's site. You will probably get some help
there.

When the taskbar freezes like that it's because a process that is going on
behind
the scenes is working to resolve itself. Unfortuneately it could be any
number of
things that's doing this to you.

if you were a client of mine, and you gave me this symptom (which is very
broad),
i'd look at all your running processes to look for abnormal programs (like
spyware),
i'd look for programs that are using too much memory, etc.

when the taskbar is freezing up, do this....on the left side of your
keyboard, press (in this order)
CTRL SHIFT Esc, then release all three at the same time. At the top of
that window, click
"processes". you will see several columns...at the top of those columns you
will see "Mem usage"
on the right. Oh, yea, also at the botton, put a check in "show processes
from all users".

Click once on "mem usage" and you will sort the running processes in order
of use. please list
the programs you see things like svchost.exe and lsass.exe are normal.
you'll see svchost.exe several
times, but list them here anyway.

also, i'd goto www.safer-networking.org and download spybot-search&destroy.
we use it at work
to remove spyware. works great and you'll be surprised at how much spyware
is on your PC.
