Taskbar gone haywire

On every reboot after installing the latest XP update (relating to IE
6 security) the taskbar has gone haywire. I've simplified it by
unpinning all possible toolbars. Let ::: represent the separator that
consists of a vertical row of 4 pinpricks and a vertical row of 3
pinpricks. I now have Start ::: icons for open programs ::: repeat of
icons for open programs ::: blank space reaching to the Notification
Area.

At one time in the list of toolbars in addition to "Language bar"
there was also "The language bar". This has not reappeared since I
unpinned it.

Hello Rich,
I thought a virus unlikely as I have Norton Anti-Virus and Internet
Security installed and kept up to the minute. I did run NAV and found
nothing.

Since the original statement of the problem I've had various
permutations of weird taskbars at each boot. Once I even had three
"The language bar" entries in the Toolbar menu.

This last boot the taskbar has gone back to normal. Keeping my fingers
crossed that it stays that way.

Odd thing was that the trouble set in immediately following a
Microsoft download, but perhaps that was just coincidence.
