standby and when i wake it up again it gone.

I can still access the start menu, using keyboard shortcuts, as if its there
but none of the other functions are accessible.

I have to restart the whole system to get it back again which is a real pain
when your in a hurry!

Anyone got ant ideas i how i might fix this problem?

Why are you running "System Standby"?

Turn it off!

I can think of no good reason to use it, EVER.

Either leave the system on

(when not used for awhile, the heads park themselves
ANYWAY),

or turn it off. (That means, use the "Start button" on the
screen to turn the computer off.) If you MUST.

I only turn my computer off to service or reboot (s/w
installs)

If you hadn't heard, today's computers (for the past 10
years or so, anyway) are now designed to run 24/7/365, like
your refrigerator.

That icon on your computer screen -- the Green star that
says "Energy Saver" means that your computer and your
monitor are now designed to NEVER BE TURNED OFF except for
an emergency.

I'd recommend you turn your PC off as often as you unplug
your fridge.

N E V E R.

Which is why usb peripherals are soo good. I have
personally been SHRIEKING for usb (something like it) "hot
plugable" for DECADES.

The whole point of usb is to be able to swap out/ add/
remove devices without the DREADED SYSTEM SHUTDOWN.

Do you know for YEARS, the majority of system FAILURES
occurred during system shutdown/restarts?

You know what failed MUCH of the time?

The &*&&&087 "On" switch!

As proof that I'm not being a "crazy geek", I can tell you
first hand, that in 25 years, I've had.... like 5 (five)
"On" switches break.

And-- let me tell you-- it's easier to replace a CASE than
it is to swap a start switch.

short of it...

Don't turn your computer off! it's INTENDED to be left on!

And go into your Screensaver settings and make sure all your
Power settings are set to "never turns off."

The ONLY thing that should "turn off" should be the monitor.
And use a screen saver that turns the screen dark IF YOU
MUST.

Last resort. Leave the computer on; turn off the monitor.

(hope this helps)

I'm sorry, I find Michael's suggestion completely unacceptable - the cost of
everyone doing what he suggests in terms of annual national electyrical
consumption would be horrific.

All I want to know is how to stop the taskbar dropping off the bottom of the
screen while I'm doing something else.

YES I have ticked "Lock Taskbar"

NO I cannot use the mouse to lift the taskbar back onto the screen

NO, Ctrl-Esc does NOT recall the missing taskbar

The ONLY solution I have found is to right click somehwre on the desktop and
open "properties", and then swop rapidly between the four tabs, "Appearance",
etc, which is a ridiculous way of going about things if the fault can be
stopped somehow.

Practical help, please
