Taskbar and desktop icons gone in Windows XP

Had a corrupted Windows XP file so reinstalled from the OEM (Dell) disk.
Then used Windows Update to update and when rebooted got a "missing
\windows\system32\c_437.nls" error. Booted off CD into the Recovery Console
and ran chkdsk /r. It said it fixed errors. On reboot I sometimes get a
system error about there not being a page file or one of the right size and I
should go into Control Panel to fix it. Then the Windows desktop came up and
with alt-ctrl-del I could get into Task Manager but I have no desktop icons
and no taskbar...and can't figure out how to get to the Control Panel.
Booting in Safe Mode didn't work (still no icons or taskbar).

Hi Scott,

For the no desktop icons or taskbar problem, see if running this fix
(provided courtesy of Kelly Theriot) helps solve the problem:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm (scroll down to line 195,
right-hand side -->Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar)

For the paging file error message, see if the information in this MSKB
article, "Error Message: Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File
Is Too Small", helps to resolve the problem:

Regards,

Patti: Thanks! But how can I run that VBS on the machine if I can't get to
the Internet on the machine (which I can't do because I have not figured out
how to do that without desktop icons or a taskbar) (I am using another
machine to post these messages). Thanks.

Open Task Manager, and go to File>New Task (Run...) and key in:
iexplore.exe
Click on OK or hit ENTER
That should open Internet Explorer.
You could also click on the Browse button (after going to File>New Task) to
navigate, or key in:
explorer.exe
Click on OK or hit ENTER
That will open Windows Explorer, which you can use to navigate to whatever
program or other file you want to open.

Regards,

Patti: Sorry to keep bothering you...I can't get IE or Windows Explorer to
start with that method - no error message is returned...the hard disk seems
about to do something and then nothing - nothing comes up. Perhaps I need to
do something more drastic.

I was at work all evening, so I didn't get back to your thread until now.

I hope you don't end up having to reformat and reinstall, especially if you
have stuff saved that you'd hate to lose!

Give this a try.......
Boot into Recovery Console, and key this in at the command prompt:
expand x:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe
(substitute the x for the actual drive letter designation for the CDROM
drive)

Boot "normally", and, if the Desktop still doesn't load, see if you can run
the explorer.exe command from File>New task in Task Manager.

You could also try d/loading the "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" VBS
file onto a floppy disk (assuming that there is a floppy drive on both
computers) on the computer that you're using to post your messages, then
placing the floppy in the "problem" computer, and going to File>New task,
Browse to the file on the A: drive and see if it will run.

Regards,

Article ID 315270 did not work for me

On the Intel site I checked my chipset using their utility, down loaded the
appropriate "Application Accelerator" and installed it.

This cleared up the problem.

SP2 and xp repair started my little anventure into this realm.
