Task Scheduler service will not start.

Task Scheduler service will not start.
Could Not Start Task Scheduler on local machine.
Error 267 The directory Name is invalid
so far all the folder names I have tracked down in the
registry connected to svchost.exe are valid.
This behavior may be connected to damage suffered
recently from a virus.
I have had to reinstall Windows XP and all the upgrades
and SPs. The problem still exists.
Can anyone help?
