For some mysterious reason I cannot fathom,
some processes get a lower priority,

I do not change them manually and have to keep setting them back to "normal"

see pic http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/5044/tasks9bp.jpg

does anyone have an explanation for this?

This has been happening not only on this installation, but before I
formatted too.

thanks in advance

What appears in your posted image would seem to be normal enough. I took a
look at Task Manager on my own PC this morning, and most of the processes
listed under Image Name were reporting CPU use % of 00 to 02 (one entry).
CPU usage seemed to fluctuate for the System Idle Process...
I do not change them manually and have to keep setting them back to
"normal" <

Perhaps I don't get it, but what do you mean by Changing them back to
normal?

All of these Below Normal priority processes appear to be 'intermittent'
in terms of cpu usage. You should present the entire list so that we can
see what, if anything, has been set to High priority. If you are running
a (or several) high priority process, then others might be depreciated
to compensate.

OTOH, what possible could be wrong with Notepad at "below normal"?
