Task Pain always at startup

I am assisting a customer using Office 2003 on a Windows 2000 system. The
task pane always comes up starting Word. I removed all startup templates,
turned off task pane at start in options and it still comes up. I renamed the
normal.dot and renamed the sttings file in the registry and still the task
pane comes up. The wierd thin about it is I will turn it off, then when I
shut down word, it pops back up for an instant as the app is closing down.
Then whe I reopen the app it is back again. Any Ideas?

Is it defaulting to any particular pane? What happens if you close Word and
hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click on the Processes Tab, click on Image Name to sort
the list alphabetically, do you see Winword.exe listed? If so, click on it
and hit End Process and click on Yes. Then open Word again, uncheck Startup
Task Pane, close Word and reopen Word?

Reboot?

Hi Nick,

Try solution 1. Then, as the article says, "When you start Word 2003 the
next time, the task pane should not appear. If it does, go to Solution 2."

There is a third solution, the Task Pane Controller that you can download
from http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ShowTaskPane.htm. In fact, I
recommend you try this one first.
