How can I find out what is consuming 50% of my CPU (dual
processor 600Mhz) running XP Pro. There are no
applications running. Intially it is at 1-2% but climbs to
40-50% when all I'm doing is listening to an internet
radio station (streaming audio). When I quit all
applications, the CPU stays at 40-50% and will never come
back down until I reboot.

I've run Spybot and it turned up nothing, and there is no
network traffic seen in Task Manager.

I might add that under the processes tab it shows "system
Idle" as being the only process consuming CPU... or should
I say, nothing is consuming CPU... yet the CPU in the
performance tab is at 40-50%

Task Manager is useful but you could look at another freeware utility
Process Explorer, which provides similar information but adds that little
bit extra towards seeing what the running processes represent. For further
information about Process Explorer see here:

Sorry to butt in, but I was having a similar issue. Idle proc shows ~97%, but
the CPU graph shows 50-60 at all times. (All updates, no spyware, etc)
Using the process explorer I found that hardware interrupts were reported
under idle processes. I suspected USB devices and began disabling them one by
one, watching the process viewer. I finally found one that when disabled,
broght my cpu usage back down to 2-3%. Thanks Gerry and hope this helps Joe.
