Is there a way to get directly to Task Manager, without having to
first use ctrl-alt-delete?

And do you suppose Microsoft will ever get its act together so that
End Process will actually work every time?

You can right-click an empty spot on your Desktop Taskbar, and choose Task
Manager, or make a shortcut to C:\Windows\System32\taskmgr.exe.
