Task Manager won't stay up

Recently I developed a problem that happens sometimes (not all the
time) in which if I start Taaskmgr with ctrl-alt-delete, it appears for
a second but then disappears, even when I've just restarted XP. What
might cause this and how can I fix it, _without_ having to reinstall XP
from the backup CD that came with my computer? Thanks.

Symptons may also be a virus or malware. AdAware and SpyBot are
a good start, but norton AV and a decent firewall will help too.
