Task manager won't run

Running XP Home Edition service pack 1 on a Dell Dimension.

Task Manager has gone flaky; when I try to run it, the window
appears for about a second then closes down again. The CPU meter
appears in the system tray, but when I move the mouse over it, it
disappears.

The only significant event of the last few days was Sophos grabbing
a copy of a dialler virus Dial/Top69-A that my daughter had managed
bring into the machine. I've isolated & deleted the infected files.

Are these things related? And how do I get the task manager back?

Thanks for any help.

w32.spybot worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:

Try this to:

Also See

It could also be W32.Klez

Greetings --

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.spybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

I just had the same problem, but none of Norton's solutions worked or found
it.

I was shocked that it got through Norton as Norton has blocked hundreds of
attempts on our systems through the years. It also got through our router
fire walls. I ran Norton to see if it could find it, and even did this in
safe mode, but no luck. I also tried downloading a special program from
Norton and ran that and no success.

So I tried the bitdefender "Online Scan" at
http://www.bitdefender.com/index.php?tab=0 and it found it right away.
Although it couldn't delete it, it did tell me the file name Initiate.exe
was the problem. So i searched the hard drive and registry and deleted all
references, then rebooted. That did it!

This is cool app that also helped me in that it gave me use of Task
Manager, Defrag, MSConfig, and Regedit programs until I found out what the
problem was.

Thanks McPloppy!
