Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up Windows Security window, with
options for Lock Computer/Log Off/Shut Down/Change
Password/Task Manager/Cancel
..
When I click on Task Manager, it does NOT bring up the
Task Manager, it simply returns to the desktop.
..
This worked fine until this morning, when my laptop got
infected. Contacted McAfee for assistance, they sent me
a Stinger utility which disinfected my PC. All works
well except that I can no longer get to Task Manager.
..
Anyone have any thoughts on restoring Task Manager?

Taskmgr.exe should be listed in the %SystemRoot%\system32 directory. If you
cannot find the file, you can extract it from the Windows XP CD. To do so,
you can perform the following steps:

Insert your WinXP CD into the CD Drive
Click Start>Run
type cmd press Enter.

At the Command Prompt mode, type the following command:

Example:-

F: (This assumes the F is the CD Drive)
cd \i386
expand taskmgr.ex_ %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\taskmgr.exe

Task Manager - Control/Alt/Delete - Doesn't work
Check your settings here: For Pro

Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative
Templates/System/Crtl+Alt+Del Options. In the right pane double click Remove
Task Manager and enable it.

Also, if you have disabled the Alerter Service, CAD will be disabled.
