when i press ctrl alt del after initial startup taskmgr opens fine but after
running for a short period of time it no longer responds but the icon does
appear on the taskbar by the time. I have used a variety of virus scans
including online scans and no viruses have been found, looking through forums
I have also checked for wuaumqr.exe but cannot find it (have turned on show
hidden files) both in normal mode and safe mode, when I check
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run i cannot see
any strange processes except the aaupdate.exe.

As a side note taskmgr is not the only thing affected if I try to use winrar
to un archive a file i get the same problem. Also if I open IE it opens but I
am unable to browse to www.yahoo.com or any other website via the search bar,
if I use the link to a favourite it opens without a problem.
I am running XP with sp1
I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide

Hi Christopher,

Congratulations for providing the right information.

Here is your problem, from asking Google for "aaupdate.exe:, and your
solution.

I followed the instructions in the link, no virus found removed all
references to aaupdate.exe from the registry with system restore turned off,
rebooted pc and it returned, booted into safe mode repeated the procedure and
also scanned for the file which it did not find. still suffering from the
other issue

Hmmmmm. My thinking was that some hostile process is keeping your CPU at
100% activity. Without Task Manager, you can't verify this, can you? Also,
Internet browsing is still disabled, except from favorites. Right?

Can you look if there are significant error messages that can help us
discover what the problem is?

Look in Event logs
Start => Settings => Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Event Viewer.
There are three categories: Application, Security and System. If there are
messages with an exclamation mark on a yellow triangle or messages marked
with a white X in a red stop sign shaped background, this might be helpful
to solve your problem. Please post back with anything you can find suspect
in Events logs, and please note if there error message numbers associated
with these messages (if any) we can go by to find your solution.

I checked the event logs it does not show any error message or anything
unusual running. decided to try an experiment, loaded the system up and wrote
down everything running and then end tasked each process 1 at a time until
taskmgr stayed up permenantly found out that if i removed a process called
wdfmgr.exe it ran fine, searched for the file it was executing and found it
in windows\system32 so i renamed it and haven't had a problem so far. not
100% what the program does though as the description on the web does not
really give much informatin

Here's some info..
wdfmgr - wdfmgr.exe - Process Information
Process File: wdfmgr or wdfmgr.exe
Process Name: Windows Driver Foundation Manager

Description:
wdfmgr.exe is part of Microsoft Windows media player 10 and above. This
process decreases compatibility problems whilst the product is in use. This
program is non-essential process to the running of the system, but should
not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.
