I have no idea how this happened as I have not changed any
administrative settings. When I do a ctrl+alt+del I get
the message: "Task Manager has been disabled by your
administrator".
I have looked in the administrative tools area but am not
sure what I am looking for exactly.
I am the only user of this particular machine and am
running XP Pro.

Sounds like my adversary MSCONFIG32.EXE.
Look in the start up tab (via the genuine msconfig)If you
see MSCONFIG32.EXE running,untick the box.Reboot (you'll
get the configuration message informing you that you've
made adjustments, etc and Windows is running in selective
mode.
Try to do an online virus scan.If you're lucky (assuming
it is MSCONFIG32.EXE)the infected files might be detected.

Please post back.Especially if you find a solution.All I
can do is contain it.

Alternatively, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look in the right pane for a value called DisableTaskMgr. If it exists, it should be set to 0 (zero). If not, double click it and set it to 0. If it doesn't exist, right click in a blank area of the right pane and select New, DWord value. Name it DisableTaskMgr and leave it set at 0.

Sorry to say the MSCONFIG32.exe wasn't the problem but the
reg hack DID work.

Thank you guys so much! This has been plagueing me for 2
months!
