I try to get to my task manager the following two ways:
by hitting Ctrl + Alt + Del, or right click on task bar
and choosing task manager. Everytime it opens it
immediately closes again. It is driving me nutts, and I
dont' know why. What do you think? The same process
goes for system configuration. I type "msconfig" into
the run on the start menu, so I can stop unwanted
programs from starting at the beginning of windows, and
the screen flashes for a moment, then nothing. I have
all updates and patches that I know of. I am totally
dumbfounded. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello!

The worm disables NAV, Msconfig, Regedit and Task Manager:

Rename regedit.exe to regedit.com then: Download then
Merge the edit on line 251 then delete all the files
mentioned in the above link.

Hi there,

Maybe you can go for recovery console or open a new
command prompt and type sfc /scan to scan whether there is
problems with your Windows XP. Make sure the Windows XP is
there when you do either one way.

Thank you.

You have a virus.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Create Emergency Copies of Critical
XP System Utilities. This small VB Program will create backup, usable
copies of Task Manger, Regedit and MSConfig (named Taskmgr1.exe, Regedit.com
and MSConfig1.exe) in a new folder C:\EmergencyUtil. Many virus programs
will intercept these programs, based on their original file name. The
modified file names, allow them to be run. Open Windows Explorer to
C:\EmergencyUtil and double click the application you need. The next
revision will allow you to browse for the folder you want to place the
backups in.

Additionally, see the Win XP Utilities section for Startup Programs Tracker.
This small utility scans your system for startup programs and running
processes. It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and
pasted into a newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also
copied to the Windows Clipboard, automatically.
