My lower task bar periodicaly disappears. The only way that I can get it
back on is to restart.

Thanks

Len Urban

Not a solution, but to get out of having to restart.
Next time press "crtl + shift + esc" > click processes > find "explorer.exe"
in the list & select it > press "end task" > wait for what seems like
windows disappearing > press "alt + F" > select "run" > type "explorer" and
hit "enter".
(most programs will still be running, any 3D game running might die or make
it a slow process.

What do you mean by your "lower" task bar? Exactly what disappears and
what doesn't?

What does "periodically" mean? How often? What are you doing when it
happens?

The lower task bar has the logo for the start button on the left, it also
contains the names of the programs that have been minimized (which is the
main problem) also other programs Norton, speaker controls etc.

I leave my computer on when I am home. It almost always occurs after an hour
or two.

And? What other kind of task bar is there?

The word lower is probably redundant. However, its possible to move the task
bar to the other edges of the screen.

The task bar disappeared since I was last on about an hour ago. The logo on
the left representing what used to be the start button is still there. I'm
going to try to see if the disappearance is correlated to some other
action.

What screensaver is running, is your computer set to sleep, is the hard disk
set to switch off after a period?

Ah! OK, I think I understand you now. When you spoke of the "lower
task bar" I thought you were contrasting it with some other kind of
task bar, which made no sense at all.

However, its possible to move the task
bar to the other edges of the screen.

That's correct.

I think I'm getting confused by your terminology again. Do you mean
that the task bar is present but there's nothing on it except the
Windows orb at the left? Do you mean that the orb is there, but to the
right of the orb, there's your regular desktop--no task bar at all? Or
do you mean something else?

I'm
going to try to see if the disappearance is correlated to some other
action.

The orb is there, however, there is no evidence of a task bar. The backround
where the task bar is normally located is identical to the desk top
backround.

Hmm! That's new to me--never seen it before. Sorry, I can't help then.

Does the orb work if you click on it?

The orb works fine. I'm still in my ninty day free help period from
Microsoft. I'll give them a try.

Thanks to you ane Defec Tailsman for your help.

In an attempt to isolate the cause of the problem I have turned the screen
saver off and turned off the sleep option. Where do I go to see when the
hard drive is set to switch off?
