Task bar icon when booting

I seem to have a new icon that sometimes shows up toward the end of booting
up. It then goes away. It is shaped sort of like an hour glass that has
red bars across it and it moves up and down. So far I have been unable to
figure out what it is. I think it's internet related. All help will be
appreciated.

Can someone suggest an internet activity program that logs whats happening?

If you map network drives at logon, eg shared folders on other machines, and
they are not available, then the icon that appears is similar to the one you
describe. Could be that.
