task bar buttons disappear

All the buttons for the opened application windows do not
show up in the task bar. The situation is even worse
when an application window is minimized -- it seems that
it hides behind the Quick Launch Toolbar. This implies
that I have no way to re-display that application
window. I have tried all menu items from the right click
of the task bar, but in vain.

Any idea on how I can rectify this?

Hi Kam,

Run the edit on line 240:

Programs Aren't Minimized in the Taskbar (Line 240)

Note: Do not reboot or logoff. Once the edit is merged, right click the
Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes. Highlight Explorer.exe, End
Process.

Leave the Task Manager open. Once the process has ended, choose File/New
Task and type in: Explorer.exe.

Hello!
By default, Windows XP will hide any icons in the
notification area that are inactive for a longer period.
You can see what icons are hidden by clicking the small
arrow button next to the notification area. This will
reveal all hidden icons for a few seconds. It is also
possible to set the behaviour per icon individually:
Click the notification area with the secondary mouse button.

Click the option Customize Notifications...

Select an item in the list and change its notification
behaviour; you can choose from three behaviours:

Hide when inactive
Always hide
Always show
