MS had a programme called 'Talk It' where you typed a sentence and
pressed a button and the computer spoke the sentence. You could alter
the pitch, gender, rate, etc of the speech. My autistic boy liked
playing with this and it helped encourage his language.

Is there any freeware like this?

[OT] Is there a link to 'Talk It' as I can't google it.

TIA,
R.

I can't remember for sure, but I'm thinking AnalogX had a speaking program
something like that.

In Windows XP there is the narrator (programs / accessories /
accessibility). Also there is CFS-Technologies Speakonia
http://www.cfs-technologies.com/home. I am not sure either of these is
what you are looking for.
