I have a computer that I have XP Pro on and I want to put
XP home on that computer and use the copy of XP Pro on my
file server. With the least amount of hassle how can I
achieve this?

Thanks-
Janet

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to format
the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path or
technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Janet,

Not only is there no downgrade path between XP Pro and XP Home . . .

- If your copy of XP Pro is an OEM version, you can not legally transfer it
to another machine. That is a restriction of OEM software and noted as such
in the EULA that you agreed to when it was originally installed.
- If it is an OEM version and "branded" to the computer mfr's machine, it
will almost certainly have been "modified" in a way that is likely to make
it non-compatible with any other brand of computer (and in some cases any
other model of the same brand computer).
- So, if it is an OEM version, your only recourse would be to go out and buy
a new copy of WinXP Pro, if you really need it.
