Don Zalkin

I have a document using Header styles, but cannot create a
Table of Contents. The TOC dialogue is normal, but
doesn't create any output. I also have one caption in the
document with a Table label, but cannot create a List of
Tables. I have done this many times before with other
documents, and followed the instructions, but for some
reason for this document it doesn't work. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. I am using Microsoft Word 97 SR-2.

Hi Don

Comparing this document with ones that work is really your best bet here,
but you might want to start by checking:

* your headings really do use the usual built-in heading styles - or if not
you have set up the TOC options to use the styles you do have.

* the TOC is not set up to use 'entries' (TC fields).

* all the items that you want to appear are in the main body of the
document, and not in Text Boxes

Margaret,
Thanx for the reply. I had done all the things you
suggested, but double checked them anyway. Your
suggestion NOT to use TC fields intrigued me, so I ignored
it and inserted a TC field at the first Heading in the
document, selected the field option for my TOC, and, lo
and behold, I got my whole TOC. I still don't know why
that happened, but if it works, I'm happy.
I think I need a new Bill Gates dartboard!

Hi Don

Changing the setting would have forced Word to insert a new TOC field, so I
can only assume that you had somehow damaged the last one or not updated it.
It's experiences like these that prove Word is actually driven by a lot of
little goblins peddling like mad behind the screen <g>.
