Whenever I generate a table of contents, it appears on two lines, over
extending the distance between the chapter name and page. How can limit it
to one line?

Or instead of trying to limit it to one line, give the TOC style a right
indent (leaving the right tab where it is). The text will then wrap short of
the page number, back to the hanging indent included in the style.
