Table of Contents Styles

We created a TOC using styles based on the default header styles (we don't like the spacing in the defaults). We went into TOC options after generating it, removed the levels from the defaults, and told it to use our 3 styles for the 3 levels. We replaced the table and it came out peachy-keen. However, after we made some changes to the document and F9'd the TOC, it went back to the default header styles.

Can we get it to 'keep' ours or should we just set the darn thing up with manually coding and forget it?

Why not redefine the default TOC styles, instead of creating new ones?

Press Alt-F9 to display field codes. Your TOC should look something like
this:

{ TOC \o "1-3" \z \t "EL-1,1,EL-2,2,EL-3,3" }

Updating the TOC doesn't, in itself, change the field code, so your EL-1,2,3
references should persist from one update to the next, unless you actually
delete the TOC and re-insert.

I guess I wasn't clear. We re-defined the styles that we needed for
headings within the document. Let's say they were EL-1, EL-2, El-3, etc. We
go into Options and use them for the levels instead of the default
Header1,2,3. We generate the TOC and everything is fine. However, if we edit
the document and then regenerate the TOC, we get 'error, bookmark not found'
because the TOC has reverted to Header1,2,3. We have already edited the TOC
styles to format the TOC the way we want it. I'm talking about getting the
entries into it from the document.

Hi Jezebel,

Actually, in the most recent versions of Word, if the TOC is "recreated" going
over Insert/References/Tables and Indexes/Table of Contents Word resets the
TOC to the "installation default".

Only if the user does update the actual field (either F9 or right-click) will
the TOC retain its settings. Nasty little behavioral change...

Hi =?Utf-8?B?U3V6YW4=?=,
The problem is that we are using F9 and it is still resetting!
What does you TOC field look like when you press Alt+F9, as
Jezebel suggests?

And after you press F9 to update it?

Which version of Word are we dealing with, here?

I forgot to mention - Word 2003. But, now I am really in Twilight-zone land. (doo da doo da, etc.). I had the user email me the file. And - now, I cannot duplicate the problem. The TOC is updating fine with the modified styles!!! So, I went to her desk and tried it - and couldn't duplicate the problem.

Now, I was at her desk for over an hour last week trying to get this to work. The report had to go out so, as one last stand, we fixed it, saved it, and printed it, not caring if it worked in the future.

So, now I'm wondering: is it because we didn't save it while we were fooling around? That's the only difference that I can see. Or, is her PC haunted

I appreciate all your help. She is working on a new report now (also giving us headaches - but that's a different posting). If it happens again, I'll do the alt-F9, before and after, and see what I can find. Thanks again!

That's the only difference that I can see. Or, is her PC haunted?It could have simply been a temporary glitch in Word that disappeared as soon as you
re-booted. These kinds of things happen, now and again (with all software). I'm just glad
it's cleared up!
