table of contents - page links

Back in Word 97 when I created a table of contents with page numbering, if I
clicked on the page number I would be taken to that page.

Now in Office 2003 when I create a table of contents (print view) and I
click on the page number nothing happens. Same thing with cross-references I
have inserted (to tables or figures) - nothing happens when I click on the
cross-reference field. It used to take me to that secion/table/figure in the
document.

Any suggestions?

If you have ScreenTips enabled, you should be seeing a ScreenTip saying
"CTRL + click to follow link." If you prefer to restore the earlier
functionality, there's a check box for this on the Edit tab of Tools |
Options.

Thanks Suzanne,

A lot of new functions to learn. You have saved me a couple of times. I
appreciate your contributions.

Glad I could help. Note that the new functionality is intended to be
helpful, allowing you to edit the display text of hyperlinks without Word
haring off to follow the link as soon as you click on it.

I have to agree that it is helpful. It always bugged me when I was editing
around the link area and I would buzz off to parts unknown (which would then
open up the "web link tool bar" at the same time that I would have to
immediately turn off because it took up extra space on my screen, after I hit
the back button though to get me back to where I was supposed to be).

I agree that a vast majority of these new functionalities are helpful. It
is always a matter of relearning. I used to consider myself a "Table Master"
and a "Style Master" in that I could always answer anybody's questions about
these 2 areas of Word.

I have now been demoted to "Table and Style Newbie" :-)

Thanks again for the help

Thanks for the answer. I allmost uninstalled office 2003 due to the fact that
it wouldn't take be to the cross reference when clicking on the reference.
Now I can.

I never really understand MicroSoft policy. Why change a functionality when
i work perfect. The same with the graphic/MMI of office 2003 which is much
more confusion than office 2000.

This change was made in Word 2002. It makes it much easier to select and
edit hyperlinked text because clicking on it doesn't automatically follow
the link.

Suzanne,
Having problems with this also. I checked and this option is selected.
I've redone the TOC, place cursor on a TOC title, select CTRL and left (and
right) click on the mouse...nothing happens. Any idea what I am doing wrong?
(I'm going from 2002 to 2003).

By default your entire TOC entry should by hyperlinked. If you opted out of
this feature, at least the page number should be hyperlinked unless you have
unlinked the TOC field.
