Is there a way to keep the styles I assign to my Table of Contents? I use the
Options button, select my styles, assign a TOC level and then create the TOC.
THe problem is I can't save the settings that I chose with the Options
button. WOrd defaults back to standard settings.

Hi Eastie

No, and yes. No, there is no way to change the defaults shown at Insert >
Reference > Index and Tables. But you could set up a table of contents just
as you want it, do Shift-F9 to display the field codes rather than the field
results, and then make an AutoText of the whole field (ie including the
braces that Word inserts around the Field).

Then, you could insert the AutoText, and update it, to create a Table of
Contents with the same setup in other documents.

For more information see

Hope this helps.

The options are embodied in the field that is inserted when you make a new
TOC. If you want to update the TOC (to reflect changes in the document's
headings) you just need to update the field.

If you want to insert a similar TOC in another document, copy the field and
paste into the new document, then update to reflect the new document
structure. Better still, make a template and include the TOC field in it, so
that you can make new documents with the TOC already in place.

In Word 2002 and above, if you want to edit the TOC options without losing
what you already have, use Edit Field from the right-click menu, and reopen
the TOC dialog from the button in the Field dialog. Earlier versions of Word
you must edit the field codes directly. (Alt-F9 to see field codes).
