table of content won't stick

I've created a table of contents for those that want to read past and present newsletter information. I have added a link in the table of content by month.

My question is when adding a new month and a link to that months newsletter information on the table of content page, do I need to copy the table of contents to that new months file?

Another problem I am having is once I have done the transferring of new updates on my website, I go back and look at my website as if I am surfing the web, and I am finding that my table of contents is not showing the new month and its link? Do you know what I can be doing wrong here?

It is driving me crazy, and I thought it would be just a simple add new month and the link to the information, and it should work. It is like my new information is not sticking. Help would be wonderful...

Is it just a table with links in it or is it the actual table of contents
component in frontpage?
ie insert/web component/ table of contents

You've lost me there. This is where a link to your site or offending
page(s) would come in handy. ;-)

How are you doing the transferring of new updates. when you go back and
look as if surfing the web, which web are you looking at the one online or
the one in your computer?

Link is necessary.

HTH

Sound like you should create a subweb (if allowed by your host) for each month, and then insert the
TOC into that subweb.

Chris:

I basically take the information off of Publisher and do the copy and paste to Frontpage (I know this is the hard way, but I cannot convert it to well through Adobe due to the many images)so I kinda re-invent the wheel.

I create the TOC in FrontPage with links to the actualy monthly informations. The path would look like this: My Webs\newletter\marapr04\MA2004pg1.

Newsletter is my subweb and within this subweb is Feb2004 informaiton, and then I created another file for MarApr2004. My TOC is in another file called ImagesN204.

In your opinion, would I take the TOC that is in the file ImagesN204, copy and paste it to the MarApr04 as well as the images, add the link for March/April to the TOC and then update through FTP and then publish it? Thanks

Instead of using the TOC component, why not just create a TOC page (using a table) with a link to
each issue of the newsletters and place in the root of the subweb?

I did indeed create a subweb for this newsletter because I have to add the new information each
month. I have basically, under the subweb "newsletter" create another file called "MarApr2004".
So if I am hearing you correctly, do I copy and paste the TOC to each new folder I create monthly
under the subweb and just add the new month and link? I was thinking that I could just use the same
TOC, add that month/link and just FTP it or am I thinking wrong??? Thanks

Thomas:

I did create a TOC page in Frontpage, and there are links to each months issue of the newsletter. I actually placed the TOC in the subweb or even in "My Webs (root right)", and when I go to advertise it once I have FTP'd it, I go back and check to see if the update has been done, but it hasn't. I check the website in internet mode not on my own computer.

Since you are uploading via FTP, I think you have to change it from being updated automatically.

Sorry, I meant to say that you need to change the TOC component to not be automatically updated, and
I would place it in the root of the subweb.

Would i change this in the FTP window? I guess what I am really asking is does it matter what
folder, under the subweb, the TOC is in as long as I provide a link to that months information?
Also do you think its a FTP problem since it will not transfer the updated information?

Thomas:

Thank you for keeping up with me on this problem. Actually the TOC isn't a web component. I created the TOC from scratch. Would creating a TOC from scratch cause more problems since I didn't use the web component included in FrontPage?

Also, I am running into another problem with the navigation links to these pages. Here is the senario, and can you tell me what you think or suggestions.

I created navigation links (left side) to go to pages in the newsletter. Now that I have a new month to add, I use the same navigation links from the previous month newsletter with maybe a deletion of two or more of those links in the new month newsletter.

What is going on is when I change a navigation link to reflect that new information page, out of curiosity, I go back to the previous months newsletter, click on that navigation link and it changed to reflect the new months navigation link information.
Do you know why this is happening? Sorry to ask you so much but it seems you're the only one following my problem.

Thanks
Elaine

Elaine,

I would continue to create your TOC manually, however what are the steps you are doing when you
create a new month, and is your navigation manual or via FP navigation component?

Thomas:

When I create a new month,

1. I take the information off a disk that the months newsletter has been created on (Publisher),

2. open a new blank page in FP, and I cut and paste the information onto the FP blank page. Once I am finished adding all those pages from the disk to new "blank" FP's;

3. I go to the links on the left and do some adding or deletion on the links since I may not have information for that department. I go through the links and make sure that those links are going to the right pages that I have that link linking too for that months information.

What is going on is those links are actually linking back to the previous months information. So if I was in March's newsletter and I clicked onto a link, for example education, I would go to the Feb's page for education. It doesn't take me too the information that I may have for March for education.

Also, if I was to delete the links on the left hand side in the March's newsletter, it would also erase the links in February. It is like a daisy chain going on. Any suggestions would be very helpful so that I can get the March/April newsletter links unlinked from February. Thanks

Everything I have been doing is manually. I am still getting used to using FP, and haven't used half the resources this software has to offer.

Can you email me your TOC page?

Molly,

Ok, since you are using shared border, and FP navigation component, you must create individual
subwebs for each month, since share borders/navigations are web specific, any changes will apply to
all pages using the shared border/navigation components.

I would suggest the following structure:

Newsletter (subweb)
- TOC.htm (with manually create hyperlinks to the default document in each nested subweb, set to
Jan (nested subweb)
Feb (nested subweb)
Mar (nested subweb)

I can sure do that, but I was thinking maybe it isn't a TOC problem. Maybe it is a shared border
problem. You know when you start a new page in FP, you need a place to place the links to your
pages....well this is where I am really having the problem. My TOC may work after I fix the link
problems, but then again it goes hand in hand. Let me know what you think.
With shared borders, I know it can take the previous shared borders from a previous page and
insert it into your new page, so how do I get a way from sharing this same border when I create new
pages each month for the newsletter? Thanks and I will send you that TOC...........you can also
look at my website at www.nooksack-tribe.org.

I think you are understanding my suggested solution.

So basically you are stating that each month I create my newsletter information, I am to create a
new subweb for each month under my subweb newsletter instead of just a new file? We're definately
getting closer to a solution. Let me know if I am getting your suggestion right. Thanks

Thomas:

I think I have one more question for you. I have created the second subweb under Newsletter, I will leave the TOC in the Newsletter subweb, but my question is when I create a new subweb for each month will the "index.html" always appear in each subweb I create? Also, is the "index.html" suppose to have anything in it if I was to click on it or is this where I would start my first page for the new months newsletter. Thanks again, you have been a REAL BIG help. We do have an IT department, but the head IT indivdiual couldn't help me in this, so I had to keep bugging you. I will wait for your reply. I am anxious to see this work.

Molly,

Yes, a index.html file should always be in each subweb, and would be the first page of the current
month's newsletter.

Your TOC would link to each month's index.html file. Have the newsletter open in a new window, so
that TOC is always open in the background.

A BIG THANK YOU! I will continue on with what you have suggested for my newsletter. If I run into any more problems I will come back to the discussion group. Again, I can't thank you enough for your help. I can continue on and get this newsletter posted. I will definately keep the TOC in the Newsletter subweb, and just manually add the links on the TOC to monthly newsletter. Peace

You are welcome!
