Table Error Message

I am importing data from a survey into multiple tables in access. One table is large, but not to be split. I need to amend the field type from Number to Text on some fields. Error message comes up on save. "Too many fields defined" will not save changes. Can anybody help with this as I need to get this data imported.
 
You can only have 255 fields per table in an Access database.
