Tab character in Word 97

I'm using Word 97. I'm trying to copy some columns in a word document
separated by tabs into an editor in my application. The tab spaces are
getting lost when I paste the content in my editor. The tabs are retained
with Word 2003.

Please suggest a solution on how to retain the tab characters during copy/
paste operation. This is urgent

The program I'm pasting in is an editor similar to the one that we find in
yahoo mail. It handles and recognizes the tabs since it works fine with Word
2003. The problem is with older versions of word. My guess is that the
character that is sent for a tab character by word 2003 and word 97 is
different. So, I would like to know how to handle this.
